engorged/overproducing milk and baby doesnt want to feed?
My baby is 6 days old, and i have been exclusively breastfeeding. about 2 days ago, my breasts became very engorged and huge, and are hard and leaky. At first i was pumping it out after my baby fed just to get relief ( i was getting about 5-6 oz total after a feeding from both breasts) and then i realized that if i kept doing this I would just keep producing this much and then would have to feed and then pump every time and then i may as well just pump and give him a bottle that way. So i want to reduce my milk production to just what he needs for right now. any suggestions? My breasts are so full that he can't latch on and it's already a problem because I have flat nipples so the bigger and harder they get the harder it is for him to latch on. ( i did pump a bit before i attempted to latch him on just to soften it a bit but it didn't seem to work)
Pump (or hand express into a cloth) a bit off of the top like you did. Then use your thumb and forefinger to smash your nipple into a sandwich shape and present him with that. He just needs some help getting latched on.
You are right to stop pumping so much. Only pump enough for relief or to aid latching.
This will only last a few days, then it should be much easier for you both.
Add: Your supply will naturally settle out over the next few weeks, but in just a few days, your engorgement will subside, as will the leaking.
