What do I need to prepare my son to join the ski team at High school?
My son is interested in joining the school ski team. I do not ski and know very little about the sport. I went into the local ski shop and they hooked me up with some Rossi world cup race skis. How do I tell if they will fit my son this winter because he is growing taller by the day? What items will he need to race with the high school? Does every bag fit all race ski's? I need to start buying now so he will have everything he will need by winter. Thanks for any help and suggestions.
The first person you should speak to is the coach of the racing team. Most competitive skiers have a regular work out plan that they use in the off-season. The coaches should be able to give you that to help your son prepare for the winter. I can almost guarantee there will be a good deal of weight-training, stretching, and aerobic conditioning. While lower and mid-body strength is an absolute must, overall body conditioning will undoubtedly improve your son's performance. Diet and sleep are also very important. Protein and veggies should be staples. I would eat carbs when training, but never before races. I won't discredit anyone who says running will also help, however, NOT running never hurt my performance. My coaches used to rag me about running, but they would never win the arguement. I spent my summers backpacking at higher altitudes, so my lungs worked just fine and my personal bulk gave me greater mass, so I often let gravity work its magic.
Weight...if anything, has more to do with what skis your kid needs to ride than does his height. If you go to a ski shop to buy new planks and all the salesman does is measure his height...walk out and go to another ski shop. For EVERY ski on the market, there is a weight chart. Ask the shop guys to dig it out for the specific model ski you are looking for or have already purchased. If he's in the range for the ski, he should be good. Going bigger is better than having shorter skis because it's much easier to bulk up thanit is to loose weight...plus he's getting taller. Bones weigh a lot.
HS ski teams go through equipment faster than the US Olympic team does. Whenever I go to the Vermont ski swaps (various locations from October-December) I will ALWAYS find tons of last years' race stuff there for sale. If it is not too beat up, you can usually get a good deal on gear and a good ski tech will be able to bring it back to good working order. (Honestly, it's usually just the topsheets of the skis that are banged up. Most ex-race skis I see at the swaps have bases and edges that are in excellent condition because they were regularly precision tuned for the racers.)
Other stuff: Depending on the school's program and the other local schools, the extent of additional gear will range from basic helmets, gloves, and outerwear all the way up to full-face helmets, leg protectors, and speed suits. My HS and college teams (15 years ago) weren' as hardcore about all of the gear. It was the Poconos. Most kids were just racing to have something to do. However if you live in Vermont or Colorado, expect the HS kids to be using the top-of-the-line ski racing equipment. If the school provides some of that stuff...AWESOME, but more than likely this will not be the case. So I suggest you be prepared to take up daytrading on eTrade; apply for a few more AMEX gold cards, and take the penalties on your 401(k) to fund his sport.
Finally...ski bags are usually cut to fit skis up to 200cm. Some racing bags go longer, but the days of the 215cm racing ski are long gone.
